New import company, Coffee Galore, has begun selling specialty coffee beans from the mountains of the Dominican Republic. Shade grown at high altitude this coffee compares well with the finest coffees anywhere.Café Montaña, is a high altitude, shade grown, hand washed, sun dried gourmet coffee from the Dominican Republic. Café Montaña coffee is produced from the highest quality beans found in the Cordillera Central mountain range of the Dominican Republic. The coffee estates are located near the mountain town of Constanza and Pico Duarte, the tallest peak in the Caribbean. 15 years ago this area was in a state of devastation due to deforestation. The rivers had run dry and the rains had left the area leaving an arid land where the soil was turning to dust. A reforestation project begun 15 years ago replanted over 10,000 acres with coffee plants. The plants took seven years to mature and begin producing. Not only did they thrive but the rainfall returned, the rivers began to run again, and the man made arid zone has been restored to its former lushness. The initial success of the reforestation effort has prompted many farmers in the region to plant Arabica coffee and the revitalization continues. As a result, a truly premium cup of coffee is produced known as Café Montaña brought to the U.S. by Coffee Galore. |
